So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish

Posted by Author, Curator, Visually Impared Squirrel Literacy Advocate & Dynamics AX Technical Solution Professional (TSP) at Microsoft on

Just to mix things up a little, this week’s book club post has nothing to do with ERP, or Dynamics AX, and is the fourth book in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series written by Douglas Adams. If all you know about this series is from the 2005 movie, then shame on you, and shame on the makers of the movie. Dust off your VHS player, and at least watch the original BBC version that you can buy here http://www.amazon.com/Hitchhikers-Guide-Galaxy-VHS/dp/B00005YUQP/

After the first three books in the series have finished (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, & Life, the Universe and Everything) and the earth has been blown up by the Vogons, and then replaced with a replica in which everyone is having unfortunate flashbacks to the death of the planet. Arthur Dent (the main character in all of the books also learns that all the dolphins disappeared shortly after that event, and they left a gift-wrapped bowl inscribed with the words “So Long and Thanks…”, later on finding out that the dolphins are actually a super intelligent race that were trying to teach earthlings to be better, and then gave up and left.

Other quirks in the book include a truck driver that is always driving in the rain because he is a rain god, but doesn’t know it, and a man who’s house has the inside on the outside and the outside on the inside because the man thought that all the people in the world were crazy, and wanted to trap them within his house (which was inside out).

If you haven’t read any of these books, then pick them up – they are a great read.

If anyone has any book club suggestions, or comments on any of the books that we mention then don’t hesitate to drop us a note.
